Resource management and environmental action are receiving increased attention. All levels of government throughout North America are responding to the impact of waste disposal on the environment with increased regulations and incentives for improved waste management practices. The waste audit approach to waste resources has in fact become law in many North American provinces and states.

In the late 1990's, the International Standards Organization (ISO) developed and released its ISO 14000 - Environmental Management System (EMS). An EMS should also contain regularly scheduled waste assessments for both hazardous and non-hazardous solid and liquid waste streams.

Every business is unique and will need to periodically re-evaluate its waste management practices. In general, the purpose of an audit is to help a business or institution identify 4R’s (rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle) opportunities that will benefit their organization and the community.
